Melvin G. Burkert, 85 of Hamburg died February 28, 2012, in the Reading Hospital & Medical Center, West Reading, PA. Melvin was the husband of Arlene (Becker) Burkert of Hamburg. He was born in Molltown, and was the son of the late Elwood and Katie (Gehret) Burkert. Melvin worked at the Hamburg Broom Works as a stemmer prior to serving his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of Company B 13th Tank Battalion. After serving his country he worked for 23 years as a ladle man for PA Steel Foundry and Machine Company in Hamburg. He was a member of the Hamburg Moose Lodge #523, the Hamburg American Legion and V.F.W, Shartlesville Fire Company and the Union Fire Company # 1 and beneficial of Hamburg. In Addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Linda wife of James St Clair of Hamburg, Brenda wife of George I. Gerhart of Hamburg, two sons: Ronald husband of Kathleen Burkert of Kenhorst and Glenn husband of Valerie Burkert, Hamburg. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one sister: Edna Davis of Windsor Castle, three brothers, Nevin Burkert of Tilden Township, Richard Burkert of Hamburg and Arthur Burkert of Lenhartsville. Melvin was predeceased by a son: Lynn Burkert, March 3rd, 1969 and a sister, Elsie Burkert, July 7th, 2011. Graveside services will be held on Friday, March 2nd at 11:00 AM in St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg. There will be no funeral procession from the funeral home.
