Mary Guss Vastine

Mary Catherine Guss Vastine, 92, of Wernersville, died February 17, 2010 in Phoebe Berks Health Care Center.

She was the widow of Dr. Frederick Vastine.

Born in Mt. Penn, she was the daughter of the late Samuel M. and Mary B. (Bauer) Guss.

Mary was a past president of the Berkshire Heights PTA, the Alliance to Berks County Dental Society and the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

She loved knitting. Hundreds of people have warm feet because of Mary's gift of hand knit bed socks.

Mary was a member Holy Cross United Methodist Church, Reading, for over 60 years. She was very active in the W.S.C.S. and also with visiting shut-ins.

She is survived by her four children: Frederick D. Vastine, Fredericksburg, VA; Elizabeth Anne, wife of Gerald L. Bowman, York; Mary Catherine, wife of Hunter F. Taylor, Richmond, VA and Anne Lucretia, wife of John P. Childs, Wayne. There are ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren surviving.

Memorial Services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. in Holy Cross United Methodist Church, 329 N. 5th St., Reading, PA 19601. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the church at the above address. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading is in charge of arrangements.
