Mary Karetas

Mary (George) Karetas, 82, of Shillington, died peacefully July 15, 2008 at 3:40 pm in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family where she was admitted earlier that day.

She was married September 20, 1946 to the late Angelo Harry Karetas, who died September 20, 1998.

Born in Reading, PA on April 10, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Jenny (Kokonis) George.

She was a 1945 graduate of Reading High School.

Mary held many jobs throughout her life including assisting her husband in his restaurant businesses. She retired after 16 years with AT&T, Muhlenberg Township, in 1991.

She enjoyed dancing, doing crossword puzzles and traveling to Atlantic City, but most of all being with her beloved family.

Mary was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, Reading. She was an active member of the Philoptochos Society and the Olivets. Mary selflessly spent her life helping others and was admired for her energetic nature.

She was the devoted mother of two children: Jennifer Ann (Karetas) wife of Charles S. Mowbray of Wyomissing and John M. Karetas of Shillington.

Other survivors include three siblings: Theodore, husband of Margaret George; Frances George and Margaret (George), widow of Robert Wesner; all of Reading. She was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Bankes and Lillian Lasky, and one brother, John George.

She will also be deeply missed by four grandchildren: J. Alexander Karetas, Jordan M. Karetas, Kara A. Mowbray and Matthew C. Mowbray.

There are also many nieces and nephews and many great nieces and great nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 11:00 am in Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, East Wyomissing Blvd & Parkside Drive South, Reading, PA 19611. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services in the church. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Exeter Township.
