Mary Ellen Guthrie

Mary Ellen (Wademan) Guthrie, 71 of Spring Township, passed away December 31, 2008 at 8:50 p.m. in the Reading Hospital Coronary Intensive Care Unit where she had been a patient since Tuesday, December 22.

She was married to Charles M. Guthrie, Jr., Reading, First Assistant District Attorney, who passed away in May, 1991.

Born in West Reading, August 17, 1937, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Lloyd C. and Fern (Leinbach) Wademan. She was a 1955 graduate of Wyomissing High School and attended the University of Wisconsin majoring in the five year nursing program. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.

Mary Ellen was employed as a secretary to Jacob Hain, Penn Square Mutual Fund, and as office manager of Threshold of Reading, helping the disabled. She was known locally for her original MEG hand-painted crafts. She was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church, Wyomissing, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph C. and John W. Guthrie, at home, and her daughter Susan (Guthrie) Carnovale, wife of Matthew J. Carnovale, three grandchildren, Matthew P., Gregory C., and Kaitlin F. Carnovale, all of Mechanicsburg, and a step-son, Charles M. Guthrie III, of Juneau, Alaska. She was predeceased by her son, Peter A. Guthrie in June, 1972, and by her brother, Ross L. Wademan, M.D., in May, 2001. Other survivors include a sister, Nancy (Wademan) Kozloff and a sister-in-law, Marilyn (Angstadt) Wademan, both of Wyomissing.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 6, at 11 a.m. in Atonement Lutheran Church, 5 Wyomissing Boulevard, Wyomissing, PA 19610. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. in the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Atonement Lutheran Church at the above address. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
