Mary M. Gromis

Mary Matilda (Shomper) Gromis, 84 of Reading died on March 16, 2008 at 5:36 a.m. in St. Joseph Medical Center where she had been a patient for 2 days. She had previously been a resident at ManorCare Health Services, West Reading. Prior to that she resided at Stabon Manor for many years.

She was the widow of Walter J. Gromis who died in January 1988.

Born on July 5, 1923 in Tower City, Schuylkill County she was a daughter of the late William C. and Mary S. (Zerbe) Shomper.

Mary was a member of Alsace Lutheran Church, Muhlenberg Township.

She devoted her life to caring for her son.

Surviving are two children, Gail R. (Gromis), wife of P. David Weyandt, Jr. of Laureldale and Joseph W. Gromis of Reading.

In addition there are two grandchildren, Bradley D. Weyandt of Temple and Jennifer D. (Weyandt), wife of Robert O'Keefe of Muhlenberg Township.

There are also four great grandchildren, Abigail, Nolan and Megan O'Keefe and Ariana Weyandt.

Mary was predeceased by two brothers, William H. Shomper and Joseph R. Shomer and two sisters, Phyllis A. (Shomper) Schwalm and Grace T. (Shomper) Shrompe.

A memorial service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc, 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. Inurnment will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township.
