Mary Ellen Stout

Mary Ellen (Breuer) Stout, of Hamburg, passed away on December 22, 2025, at Keystone Villa in Fleetwood, at the age of 86. She was the loving wife of Joseph R. Stout, with whom she shared 46 years of marriage before his passing in 2005.

Born in Nazareth, she was the daughter of the late Herman F. and Helen H. (Hawk) Breuer. A graduate of Nazareth High School, Mary Ellen was employed as a teller for the 1st National Bank of Nazareth before relocating several times as Joe worked for PP&L and subsequently Met-ed, finally settling in Hamburg in 1977. She then was employed as a receptionist with Penn Steel for 12 years before retiring in 1995. Her most cherished role was being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed participating in the quilting group at St. John's Lutheran Church (Hamburg) and was an excellent seamstress. She was a faithful member of Bethany United Methodist Church, and most recently, Zion's Church (Windsor township).

Mary Ellen enjoyed participating in various church activities, provided community support through Meals on Wheels, and looked forward to outings with her family, especially breakfast at Perry Restaurant in Shoemakersville. Everyone she knew could count on receiving a card in the mail, no matter the occasion! Her ability to bake an apple pie was second to none, in addition to Christmas cookies and Easter candy. Her meticulous flower beds were admired by many. She was an avid Phillies fan and could quote statistics of almost every player on the team. Additionally, she looked forward to the college basketball season, Michigan State being her favorite team, and would faithfully complete a March Madness bracket every year. In earlier times, she and Joe would travel to Penn State to watch the Nittany Lions play football, enjoy trips to Florida for spring training, and Las Vegas for the shows.

She is survived by her son, Robert C. Stout and his wife Tracy, of State College; her daughter, Suann Samanns and husband Earl, of Windsor Township; her grandchildren, Jared and his wife Katrina, Kaylie and her husband Zachary, and EJ, currently serving in the USMC. She was blessed to know her great grandchildren, Gabriel, Elora, and Haven Zellers. She is also survived by her beloved nieces and nephews, in addition to a very close circle of dear friends. She was predeceased by her older brother, Frederick H. Breuer; and her sister, Frances R. Bickert.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff from Keystone Villa (Fleetwood) and Asera Hospice for providing wonderful care to Mary Ellen in her final months. A special thank you to her neighbor and longtime friend of 48 years, Shirley McClure and her husband Bill, for their support, especially over the past few years.

A graveside service will be held at Zion Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary Ellen's memory to the Hamburg Public Library or another charity of choice. If you are a college basketball fan, please fill out a bracket in her memory and watch the Phillies in the summer!
