Mary Baxewanis, 85, of Mifflin Court, died November 20, 2006 at 6:43 p.m. in Reading Hospital.

Her husband George J. Baxewanis died August 29, 2004.

Born in New York City, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Eftihia Chaknos.

She was a secretary for the Borough of Kenhorst for 32 years retiring in 1997.

Mary was a graduate of Lancaster McCaskey High School.

She was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, Reading. Mary was the first president of the Greek Mother's Club, when Sts. Constantine and Helen was located at 8th and Court Streets. She was a member of the Church Choir since 1940 and an active member of the St. Xenia Philoptochos Society, serving as president in 1979 and 1980.

Mary was the ticket chairperson for the Church Bazaar beginning in 1970 up to and including this past October's Bazaar. She served as secretary of the five year Planning Committee, which was established in 1988.

She was Education Chairwoman of the Kenhorst Women's Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Joyce (Baxewanis) wife of Stam Zervanos, Wyomissing and Ann (Baxewanis) wife of Christ Kraras, Wyomissing. Four grandchildren, Mary Dialectos, Michael Zervanos, Dean Kraras and Marisa Hunsicker and seven great-grandchhildren also survive her. She was predeceased by one brother, Gus Chaknos, Wyomissing and one sister Esther (Chaknos) Moshos, Lancaster.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. in Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 1001 East Wyomissing Blvd. Reading, PA 19611. Burial will be in Charles Evans Cemetery.
