Martin A. Kunkle, 70, of Kenhorst, died October 21, 2010 in his son's Lower Heidelberg residence.
Born in Mahanoy City, he was a son of the late Martin and Helen (Dunsavage) Kunkle.
He was a graduate of Mahanoy City High School, Mahanoy City and Penn State University, class of 1957. He received an Associates Engineering Degree in Drafting and Design Technology. He was a graduate of distinction and was salutatorian of the senior class.
Martin was a U.S. Navy veteran. In 1958 he completed the Mechanical Fundamentals Course of the Aviation Fundamentals School, ranking number 1 in a class of 149, he then graduated from the Aviation Machinist's Mate R Course with top scholastic honors.
He was employed by Textile Machine Works, Reading; Kerr Glass Manufacturing Corporation, Lancaster and Agere (Lucent) Technologies, Muhlenberg Township.
Martin loved hunting, fishing and gardening.
He is survived by his two sons: Mark C., husband of Lori A. Kunkle, Sinking Spring and Kevin J., husband of Chris A. Kunkle, Brecknock Township. Also surviving are his siblings: Rita A., widow of Bernard J. Bonner, Charlotte, NC and Edward J., husband of Linda L. Kunkle, Weatherly. There are five grandchildren: Ashley, Leah, Ryan, Colin and Kiersten and two great-grandchildren surviving.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St Ignatius Loyola R.C. Church, 2810 St. Albans Dr., Whitfield. A visitation will be held one hour prior to Mass in the church. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family in Berks County Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Martin's name to the American Cancer Society for the Relay for Life Western Berks Team Walking for Reasons, 498 Bellevue Ave., Reading, PA 19605.
