Mike Wardrop, 90, formerly of Lincoln Park, died November 1, 2013, in Phoebe Berks Healthcare Center.
He was the husband of Anna L. (Startzel) Wardrop.
Born in Bear Gap, he was a son of the late, Ralph T. and Grace M. (Sanders) Wardrop.
Mike was a graduate of Coal Twp. High School in 1941, and Penn State in 1944, earning a degree in Civil Engineering. An accomplished athlete, Mike pitched on the varsity baseball team at Penn State, where he went undefeated for the 1943 and 1944 seasons.
He was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in both World War II in the Marshall Islands and in the Korean Conflict, where he served in the Japan Occupation Forces and Amphibious Landing Forces.
Mike was a member of Lincoln Park United Methodist Church, where he was a long-time active volunteer.
He was first employed as a civil engineer for Wertz Engineering Co, Reading, and later for Textile Machine Works in the same capacity. For 30 years he was a structural engineer for Gilbert Commonwealth, Reading, until his retirement, where he participated in the design of fossil fuel and nuclear power plants, power transmission lines and water storage facilities. Mike also served as a Spring Township Supervisor from 1969 to 1978.
Mike will long be remembered as a warm and loving family man. He was a gentle giant - tall in stature and a fierce competitor, but kind and compassionate in spirit. An undiscovered poet with a quick wit, he entertained his care givers until the very end.
