Sister Marie Janeen Obara, OSF

Sister Marie Janeen Obara, 88, of the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, died of natural causes on Thursday evening, June 11, 2026, at St. Joseph Villa, Reading, PA, where she had resided since 2025.

Born in Phoenixville, PA, she was a daughter of the late John A. and Stella H. (Bernat) Obara. Sister Marie Janeen entered the Bernardine Sisters on June 26, 1966, and was in her 60th year of religious life. Sister earned a BA in Education from Alvernia College and an MA in School Administration and Supervision from Villanova University and served her ministry in education in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania as an elementary teacher, superior, and principal. Sister served in various Congregational offices: Finance, Health Benefits, and Archives. Other ministries included sacristan, card shop, and local minister.

Sister is survived by her brother John J. Obara, Phoenixville, PA and her sister, Carol A. Shine.

Visitation on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at St Joseph Villa, Reading, PA. Mass on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Convent Chapel, Reading, PA followed by burial in the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters' Cemetery, Mount Alvernia, Reading, PA.
