Maria V. Colon

Maria V. (Espada) Colon, 83 years of age passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on February 22, 2025. Born in Cayey, Puerto Rico to the late Virgilio Espada and Justina A. (Leon) Tirado, she was the beloved wife of Deacon Julio Colon, with whom she celebrated 65 loving years of marriage. Maria was a very sweet and beautiful soul and always greeted everyone with an open heart and kind smile.

She was employed by the Reading School District as a paraprofessional for 30 years before retiring in 2003.

As a devoted and faithful member of St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, Reading for over 50 years, she and her husband (Deacon Julio) were instrumental in bringing the Marriage Encounter movement to the parish. She held several volunteer positions in the church and was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Cursillo movement and served as director of lectors.

Maria loved cooking, gardening, dancing and doing crossword puzzles. We will miss her poems and her family famous homemade flan. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished in our hearts.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Maria M., wife of Andres Dominguez Jr., Reading; Wanda Colon, Reading, and Irene A., wife of Daniel Torres Sr., San Antonio, TX. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Justin A. Colon, Alina Craven, Andres Dominguez III, Ariel Dominguez, Anissa Dominguez, AJ Dominguez, Daniel Torres Jr., Marco Torres, Sophia Torres; and three great grandchildren.

Maria was predeceased by her brother, Josue Espada and grandson, Jordan A. Colon.

As we come together to honor her memory and celebrate her life, we invite you to join us in a series of services that reflect her spirit, love, and the profound impact she had on all of us. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 10 a.m. in St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church, 322 S. 5th St., Reading, PA 19602, with burial to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery. Viewing will be held Friday, February 28, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the church.
