Maria (Pothos) Papoutsis, 86, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2023, in the care of Berks Heim. She was the widow of James Papoutsis, who passed away January 23, 1991.
Born in 1937 in Volos, Greece, to the late Constantine and Vasiliki (Skarimba) Pothos, Maria survived the German occupation of Greece during World War II and immigrated to the United States when she was 25. Despite her meager beginnings and her limited education, Maria overcame much to build a good life for her family. Her sweet disposition and social nature resulted in many conversations celebrating her Greek culture.
A nurturer and natural caregiver, Maria's purpose in life was to care for others. A devoted mother and grandmother, Maria always took the time to make sure her family knew how much she loved them, especially by making sure they were well fed. She was a gifted cook and grew her own vegetables. She enjoyed baking as well, and she always baked for her church's fundraisers. Devoutly faithful, Maria was a life-long member of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church.
Maria worked at the Mohnton Knitting Mills as a sewing machine operator for many years.
Left to treasure Maria's memory are her children, Pantelis "Pat" Papoutsis (Dolores E.) of Sinking Spring and Vasiliki "Vasso" Tilley (Philip) of Sinking Spring; her grandchildren, Alexandra Papoutsis, Brianna Papoutsis, Amanda Tilley, Adam Tilley, Matthew Tilley (Shelby), and Charlotte Lupia (Derek); and her great grandchildren: James Ward, Caroline Tilley, and Alice Lupia.
In addition to her beloved husband, James, and her parents, Maria was predeceased by her brother, Elias, and her sisters, Zoe and Katina.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be offered to her church at the address below.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 1001 East Wyomissing Blvd Reading PA 19611, with Reverend Theodore Petrides as officiant. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park. The family will receive relatives and friends at Saints Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, of West Reading is entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed at kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
