Margaret E. Nies

Margaret E. Nies, 80, Sinking Spring, died April 15 in Reading Hospital, where she had been a patient since April 7. Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Earl W. Nies and Grace (Walters) Nies Miller. Nies had been employed for 37 years as a purchasing agent by Sanders & Thomas Inc., Pottstown, later STV Group Inc., retiring in 1989.

She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Reading, where she served as treasurer for 22 years and was a member of its council.

She was a volunteer with the church's Kids Cafe. Nies was a 1942 graduate of Reading High School and a 1982 graduate of Ursinus College, Collegeville, Montgomery County.

She was a past president of the Reading Hospital auxiliary and was a volunteer in its Thrift Shop.

Nies was a past matron with the Golden Rule Chapter of the Eastern Star and served as a past president of the National Secretaries Association, Pagoda Chapter.

She was additionally Northeast District director with the NSA. Nies was an admissions counselor and volunteer at the Masonic Homes of Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, and a volunteer at the Masonic Homes of Warminster, Bucks County.

She is survived by a niece and a nephew.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading. Friends may call from 12:30 to 1:00 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Masonic Eastern Star Home East, 850 Norristown Road, Warminster, PA 18974. Burial will be in Charles Evans Cemetery.
