Margaret G. Houser

Margaret G. Houser, 77, of Spring Township, passed on to her heavenly reward surrounded by her loving husband and sons on Wednesday, June 21, 2023. She was born in West Reading, the daughter of Clarence B. and Dorothy W. Gardner. Having suffered for several years, she was looking forward to heaven, a paradise without pain.

Peg, as she liked to be called, is survived by her husband of 53 years, C. Richard Houser, and her two sons: Braden R., husband of Erin, and Jon-Thomas G., husband of Charlotte. In addition, she enjoyed four wonderful grandchildren: Elijah, Emma, Maggie and Jemma.

Peg graduated from West Reading High School, attended York College and received her bachelor's degree from Shippensburg University. She extended her elementary degree to include special education and obtained a Master's of Education degree from Kutztown University. She taught school for 32 years, half in the Wilson School District as a fourth and fifth grade teacher, and after staying home with her children for eight years during their formative years, she completed her career as a special education teacher in the Wyomissing School District. She retired as the district special education department chair. Many of Mrs. Houser's students were appreciative of her advice and compassion which went far beyond reading and math.

In addition to teaching, Peg wore many hats. She was a Candy Striper, pool concession stand manager, retail clerk, assistant manager at Totes, optometric assistant, and prepared childbirth educator.

Peg's cooking was legendary, and she loved hosting dinner parties. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed cross-stitching. Her favorite pastime; however, was travel during which she and her husband visited 38 U.S. states, Canada, Mexico, two countries in South America, numerous islands of the Caribbean, and seven countries in Europe.

She was a past Elder and committee chairperson at the former St. James Church in West Reading. For the past ten years, she attended West Lawn United Methodist Church.

Services will be on Wednesday, June 28, at 12:00 noon at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Ave, West Reading with a visitation from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service.
