M. Evelyn Gechter

M. Evelyn Gechter, 97, of West Lawn, passed away in Berks Heim on January 18, 2014.

She was the wife of the late Elmer W. Gechter.

Born in Camden, NJ, on March 12, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Lawrence and Annie (Erb) Bowmen.

Evelyn was a packer for Luden's Candy for 10 years.

She was a member of St. John's Baptist de Lasalle Roman Catholic Church.

Evelyn was a foster mother for 25 years for 52 children, and was recognized by the bishop of Allentown in honor of her services.

Surviving are her four children: H. Daniel Gechter, Wyomissing, Beatrice Longenecker, Sinking Spring, Jane Hoffman, Mohnton, and Mary Ellen Kummerer, Shoemakersville.

Additional survivors include 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Evelyn was predeceased by her sister, Virginia, and brothers: Robert, Arthur, Walter, and Albert.

Services will be held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in St. John's Baptist de Lasalle RCC, 420 Holland St

Shillington, PA. A viewing will be held for 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave. West Reading, PA 19611. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Muhlenberg Township.
