Luke D. Seaman

Luke D. Seaman January 21, 1922 – February 23, 2012 Luke David Seaman died at the age of 90 from injuries sustained in a January 6 stairway fall at his home in Hamburg, where he lived with his wife of 64 years, Betty (Loose). He died at the Laurel Nursing Home where he spent his final few days, about one mile from where he was born and spent his youth in Tilden Township. An active and devoted husband, and father of two (Dianne of Upper Bern Township, and Bruce of Atlanta, Georgia), he was approaching his 90th birthday looking forward to more years engaged in his hobbies of reading and doing word puzzles, driving his car to lunches and gatherings with their friends, staying informed about world events, playing cards with his wife, and listening to Phillies broadcasts on the radio. He had always loved music and dancing, and until recent years was a particular fan of learning new line dancing moves, which he practiced with Betty. A graduate of Hamburg High School and the McCann's School of Business, he had worked for many years as a cost analyst and office manager for Confer & Smith in Hamburg, and after retirement had worked part-time for Hamburg Savings and Trust Company Bank. An air force World War II veteran who served in England and France (where he maintained life-long friendships), he had also served on the Hamburg Borough Municipal Authority, and for many years taught Sunday -School at Bethany Methodist Church. While infrequent, his travels back to Europe to visit friends and see new places with his wife provided some of his favorite memories. Their favorites were Germany and Scotland. He is remembered by his family and many friends for remarkable compassion, honesty, modesty and sense of fairness. Reluctant to turn down anyone in need, from strangers seeking driving directions to family, neighbors and friends going through the challenges of life, his selfless determination to help was a source of family pride and at times loving amusement. Often called a "true gentleman" and "the nicest man I ever knew," he had requested that he be remembered by gifts to the charity of one's choice. In addition to his loving wife Betty and children Dianne and Bruce, he is survived by his brothers Ray (and wife Betty) and Mark (and wife Jean) Seaman, his nephews Daniel, Richard and Steve Loose, and his nieces LuAnn and Lorie Seaman, as well as many life-long friends and neighbors (and latest pet, cat Skippy). His parents were Mamie (Miller) and Walter Seaman of West Hamburg. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 28 at the Burkey and Driscoll Funeral Home on 4th Street in Hamburg. The family will greet visitors starting at 10:00 AM. He will be buried in St. Johns Cemetery in Hamburg.
