Louis H. "Herbie" Schmehl, Jr., 85, of Wyomissing, died December 22, 2010 in Reading Hospital.
He was the husband of Adeline J. (Scioli) Schmehl. They celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on April 25.
Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Louis H., Sr. and Ruth (Hafer) Schmehl.
He attended Southern Jr. High and Reading High School.
Louis began working for the Reading Eagle at age 17 before being drafted in the Navy. He served on the USS Alden during World War II.
Following his military service, he returned to the Reading Eagle, where he was employed for a total of 52 years, retiring as the manager of dispatch in 1993. He was also the co-owner of Bridal Fashions in West Reading.
He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading.
Louis was a 25 year basketball official in Berks County. He was also a member of: Reading-Berks Basketball Oldtimers Association, Clover Park Athletic Association, Victor Emmanuel Society and the Reading Eagle Retirees Association.
A sports enthusiast, he bowled, played softball, and played basketball for both the Lucky Stars and the Hosiery Workers Club. Louis loved going to his grandchildren's sporting events.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two sons, President Judge Jeffrey L., husband of April R. Reed-Schmehl, Flying Hills and Jay A. Schmehl, Shillington. There are two siblings, Marie, wife of Robert Madary, Wilmington, DE; and John, husband of Irene Schmehl, Chambersburg. Five grandchildren, Kristin L., Keith J., Kurt A., Jayson L. and Jonathan A. also survive him.
He was predeceased by one sister, Catherine Schmehl in 1930.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private in Charles Evans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Berks County Autism Society, P.O.
