Louis J. Phillipine, former West Reading fire chief, died Aug. 4 at 9:04 p.m. in Reading Hospital, where he had been a patient since July 30.
Phillipine, 87, of Valley Greene Circle, Wyomissing, formerly of Chestnut Street, West Reading, was the husband of Ida (Merlino) Phillipine.
He served as assistant chief of the West Reading Fire Company from 1962 to 1970 and as the chief from 1970 to 1980.
Born in Marion Heights, Northumberland County, he was a son of the late Peter and Catherine (Marietta) Phillipine.
Phillipine was employed for 221/2 years as a machinist by Western Electric Co. and AT&T Reading Works, Muhlenberg Township, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, Reading.
Phillipine was a life member of the West Reading, Liberty of Sinking Spring and Kenhorst fire companies.
He is also survived by two sons, Louis, Atlantic City, N.J., and Dennis, Whitfield.
Other survivors include a brother, Charles, Elysburg, Northumberland County; and two sisters, Esther (Phillipine) Flemming, Easton, and Jeanette (Phillipine) Hawryluck, Elysburg.
There are also four grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Laureldale. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home Inc., West Reading, is in charge of arrangements.
