Lloyd C. Mills

Lloyd Christian Mills, 96, died May 3, 2008 at 7:35 am in his Laureldale residence.

He was the husband of Mary Virginia (Sterling) Mills, whom he married April 10, 1932.

Born on February 11, 1912 in Fairplay, Maryland, he was a son of the late Levi E. and Mary A. (Weaver) Mills.

He was a 1931 graduate of Hagerstown High School, where he was the captain of the Soccer team that won the state championship.

Lloyd was also a graduate of Columbia Business College and attended Jonesboro Baptist College in Arkansas.

Lloyd was employed in sales for a number of years with both Globe Slicing Machine and National Cash Register. He was also employed with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 33 years and was a manager of the Windsor Card Shop from 1970 - 1978.

He was a Navy Veteran of WWII, serving in the South Pacific. Lloyd was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Laureldale, where he had served on church council and was chairman of the music committee and a choir father. He also served on the building committee for the church.

He was a spotter in the Mount Penn Firetower at the start of WWII.

Lloyd was a member of Muhlenberg Township Crime Watch and served with the Laureldale Borough Board of Health for 20 years.

He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed over 40 years of fishing with his family on Lake Opincon in Ontario, Canada.

Lloyd also enjoyed gardening and traveling throughout the United States, especially National Parks and enjoyed three months camping in Alaska.

He is also survived by a daughter, Donna M. (Mills) wife of William H. Sweigart of Laureldale and two sons; Christie L. husband of Barbara (Seidel) Mills of Laureldale and William G. husband of Sandra (Mearig) Mills of Blandon.

There are also six grandchildren; Cathy, wife of Robert Wegener of Fleetwood, Jonathan, husband of Judy Mills of Orlando, Florida, Susan Kasopsky of Muhlenberg Township, Jeffrey, husband of Cheryl Sweigart of Orefield, Lehigh County, Lisa Mills of Madison, Wisconsin; and Michelle, wife of Marc Geddio of Shillington.

Thirteen great grandchildren also survive him.

Services will be Wednesday at 12 noon in Calvary Lutheran Church, 1009 Elizabeth Ave., Laureldale, PA 19605, with the Rev. Grant A. Wickert officiating. A viewing will be held from 10:30 am until time of services in the church. Burial will be in Laureldale Cemetery, Muhlenberg Township.
