Laverna Y. Ackelson

LaVerna Y. "Bernie" Ackelson, 95, of Wyomissing, passed away peacefully April 5, 2025.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 70 years, Rolland D. "Ack" Ackelson.

Born in Vandergrift, PA, she was a daughter of the late Arthur E. and Anna S. (Russell) Bier.

After attending the Robert Morris Business School, Bernie was employed as an Administrative Assistant for the Clerk of Courts in Allegheny County, PA. She volunteered with many charity and church groups and was a teacher aide in the Wyomissing Area School system. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. She will be remembered for her kind smile, quick wit, sweet giggle and fiery spirit.

She was a member of Lincoln Park United Methodist Church.

She is survived by five children: R. Duane Jr., husband of Sharon Ackelson, Wyomissing; Laura A. Gay, Virginia Beach, VA; Judson D., husband of Debbie Ackelson, Greenfields; Paige M. Ackelson, wife of Ed Babczak, Leland, NC; and James A., husband of Dawn Ackelson, Chesapeake, VA; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two siblings, Kenneth Bier and Kathleen Fennell.

At Bernie's request, service will be private. She will be interred next to her husband in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
