Larry R. Higgs, 60, of Blandon, passed away on January 19, 2007 at 1:37 a.m. in his residence after battling cancer.

He was the husband of Mary Ann (Lober) Higgs.

Born in Somerset, PA, he was the son of Marie (Kirkwood) Higgs, Wyomissing and the late Raymond H. Higgs.

Larry is a 1964 graduate of Somerset High School. He received his BS in Secondary Education in Biology and Earth Science from Penn State University in 1968. He received his MBA from Eastern University, Philadelphia in 1998.

He was a Professional Scouter with the Hawk Mountain Council, Reading, for five years. Larry was the co-owner of Northside Company, West Reading, for five years, and the owner of Higgs Heating and Air Conditioning, Reading, for nine years. He later became a salesman for UGI in 2004 until he became ill.

Larry taught Heating and Air-Conditioning night classes at Reading Area Community College and Northampton Community College.

Larry was an Air Force veteran. He was a pilot for five years and flew C-130's during the Vietnam era.

He served as a board member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Berks County, and had a Little Brother for seven years. Larry was the first President of St. Joseph's Home School Association in Reading.

Larry was the Program Chairperson for Living Spirit U.M.C., Exeter Township; he was also President of the Administrative Board of Faith U.M.C., Reading, for several years.

Larry was continually dedicated to Boy Scouting and earned his 50 year pin in 2004. He served in many positions including Scout Master of Troops #359 and #305, Reading, for 12 years, and Committee Chairperson for Cub Scout Pack #305 for three years. He was also a Committee Chairperson for Girl Scout Troop #774, Reading, for 5 years.

He was a T-Ball coach for the Angels Team in the Rising Sun Athletic Association for four years.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by one son, Matthew R. Higgs, Reading and one daughter, Theresa M. Higgs, Boston, MA, and one sister, Lynne (Higgs) Trevett, Columbia, SC.

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in Fleetwood Bible Church 2847 Moselem Springs Road. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Larry R.
