Kenneth Ambrose Schaeffer, age 99 of West Lawn, Pennsylvania passed early Monday morning March 12, 2018. He was surrounded by his loving family at the Lebanon VA Medical Center in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

Kenneth was the devoted and loving husband of Miriam Elizabeth (Gehris) Schaeffer. They were married on June 22, 1946.

He was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, on January 17, 1919 as the youngest of 9 siblings and the son of the late Harry Joseph and Charlotte Jane (Edwards) Schaeffer.

He was a 1938 graduate of Reading High School where he played football under Harold Lee Rock. He also ran track and was awarded Outstanding Athlete for 1938. Kenneth furthered his education by attending East Stroudsburg Teacher's College, where he was captain of the football team and was an athlete on the wrestling team. He also attended Gettysburg College along with advanced Physical Therapy courses at the Medical College of Virginia.

Kenneth was a World War II Veteran. He enlisted into the United States Army in 1942. A member of the 4th Armored Division, Company A, 10th Infantry tank battalion and was later captured and held as a POW in Germany. He escaped, and returned home in 1945 to later receive several medals including 3 Bronze Stars and a nomination for the Silver Star.

He taught at Southwest Middle school before working 34 years as a physical therapist at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, NJ where he was head of the department until his retirement in 1984. Kenneth was an avid reader of History and always active in sports.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters Lynne and Diane, grandchildren, Jonathan, Jennifer, Dhalia, Alia, and Solman. He was predeceased by his parents, four sisters and four brothers.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at 11:30 a.m. at Forest Hills Memorial Park, 390 W Neversink Rd, Reading, PA 19606. Contributions may be made in Kenneth's memory to the Disabled American Veterans at DAV.org or American Ex-Prisoners of War Association at 3201 East Pioneer Pkwy, suite #40, Arlington, TX 76010-5396.
