Kenneth D. Gill, Jr., 83, of Spring Township passed away on Friday, October 15, 2021, in the Reading Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Margaret (Peg) Wadsworth Gill.
Ken was born in western PA in the small milltown of Sharpsville to Kenneth D. Gill and Margory (Davis) Gill on August 31, 1938.
Ken graduated from Sharpsville High School in 1956. He was a Mercer County All-Star athlete and proceeded to Marietta College on a football scholarship. Ken graduated from Marietta with a degree in Economics and Marketing in 1962.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Following college, Ken worked for IBM Office Products Division for 35 years. Most of those years were spent in Reading earning numerous awards in Sales & Marketing.
Ken was active in a variety of community endeavors. He served as President of National Council of Alcoholism Berks County Inc., was a member of the founding Board of Directors of Easy Does It, Inc., was a six-year Board member of the Berkshire Country Club, and served as the 1996 Chairman of the Olivet Boys& Girls Club Invitational Golf Tournament.
Ken was a Master Mason and a 50-year member of Sharpsville Lodge 517 F&A (now Kedron Lodge) and a 32nd degree brother of the Rajah Shrine. Ken was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church and Common Ground Recovery Community.
Ken's real love was the Caron Foundation (formerly Chit Chat Farms). In 1979 he was asked to serve a 2-year term on the Chit Chat Board. This eventually led to Ken being the first alumnus to serve as Board Chair (1997-2001) and ultimately earning Emeritus status. In 2007 Ken received the Richard J. Caron Foundation Award of Excellence – the highest honor given by Caron.
In addition to his work at Caron, Ken also participated tirelessly in the Berks County recovery community for almost 47 years. One of Ken's greatest pleasures was his one-on-one work with men in early sobriety and the lifelong friendships that ensued. He freely shared how his own recovery enabled him to develop his relationship with God and the passion he had for helping others.
In addition to his wife, Ken is survived by his son Kenneth D. Gill III (Wendy) and his daughter Elizabeth A. Johnson (James) and grandchildren Jared Gill (Jacey), Devin Johnson, Dana Gill, and Jeffrey Gill. He is also survived by his younger brother William Gill (who he always called his hero) and his wife Patti and their children: Jan Hren (Mike), Julie Mehler (Scott) and Chris Gill (Maria). Ken was predeceased by his first wife Sally (Shirk) Gill. Ken will also be greatly missed by the extended Wadsworth family.
