Kathryn F. Huntzberger

Kathryn "Kay" Huntzberger, 98, formerly of Sinking Spring, PA, passed away peacefully, May 12, 2013 at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center. She resided at The Highlands at Wyomissing for 4 years.

She was the wife of the late Samuel S. Huntzberger who died August 5, 1984.

Kathryn was born in Amity Township, Berks County. She was a daughter of the late Bessie M. and George B. Francis. She was preceded in death by her brother, Lester S,. Francis who was killed in active duty in World War 11, November 5, 1944; a daughter, Linda (Huntzberger) Doremus; a sister, Ruth M (Francis) Pearson and a sister, Betty (Francis) Shalkop. She was also predeceased by her infant son, Richard. She was a graduate of Birdsboro High School class of 1933. In high school she was a star athlete on the basketball team and the track team, where she ran in the Penn Relays.

She went to Homeopathic School for Nursing (Community General Hospital) and started her nursing career. There she met her husband, Dr. Samuel S. Huntzberger whose office was in Sinking Spring, PA. They were married April 18, 1936.

Kathryn was a member of both the Woman's Auxiliary of the Berks County Medical Society, and the Staff Doctor's Wives of Community General Hospital. She volunteered for many years at the Woman's Exchange. She and her husband were members of the Berkshire Country Club. They loved to golf and enjoyed traveling for golf outings. Her other interests included knitting and gardening.

Kathryn is survived by her daughter, Susan (Huntzberger) Stauffer, Gilbertsville, PA. Also surviving are her five grandchildren: Jim Doremus (Susan Murray) Henniker, NH; Doug Doremus, Penacook, NH,and Kelly (Glenn) Stuart, Concord, NH; Lisbeth Stauffer Watson, Holly A. (Zay) Risinger, Coopersburg, PA; her niece, Suzanne (Dennis H) Ehrnfeldt, Wyomissing; her nephews: Richard F. (Janet) Shalkop, Osprey, FL; Terry F. (Sylvia) Pearson, Sinking Spring; Samuel L Pearson, St Joseph's, MO and Suzanne Weaver, Birdsboro; several great nieces and nephews. Four great grandchildren: Dylan Stuart, Concord, NH; Jackson Doremus, Henniker, NH; Blake Levengood, Coopersburg PA and Adam Purfeerst, Coopersburg PA also survive her.

A Memorial Service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. Burial will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Sinking Spring Cemetery.
