Kathryn H. Shultz

Kathryn H Shultz, 83 of Reading died January 21, 2013 at Berks Heim. She was affectionately known as 'FRAU SHULTZ' by her colleges, friends, and students.

Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Werner O. and Hedwig A. (Giering) Miller.

She was the beloved wife of Leon H. Shultz. There loving, carring and affectionate marriage 61 years ago at the Friends Meeting House in Reading.

Kathryn was a 1947 graduate from Westtown Friends School, Westtown, PA. She also received a BA from Albright College in 1950 and a Master's Education Degree with German concentration from Kutztown University in 1964.

In 1949 she started her teaching career at a Friend's Boarding School in Ohio and then in 1950 at Wilson High School teaching English and German. She was a teacher for the Reading School District for remainder of her teaching career She taught German in the Gifted Program at 5th & Spring, Schuylkill Ave., Greenwich, Glenside, Charles Foes and Riverside. She spent the last 11 years of her teaching career at North West Junior High School as a German teacher and the director of the stage crew. It was during this time that she was affectionately called "Frau' and that name stuck for the rest of her life. She retired in 1987. After retirement from the Reading School District she and her husband taught GED at Berks Co. Prison. She was teaching class at Alvernia as late as December 14th 2013 when her health took a dramatic turn.

Mother was interested in the world. She would question things like 'How is a wall built?" she loved to know about the building, refurbishing, repairing. She would read the New Yorker for the intellectual cartoons, and the superior writing of all the articles. She would read it from cover to cover. She loved to read – any chance she got, everything from Woman's Day to This Old House Journal. She would read Michener to Louis L'amour and love it all. She had a secret corner at Barnes & Noble where she would sit with a mocha Latte while reading and loose track of time. Her last trip there was on December 14.

In addition to her husband, Kathryn is survived by her sons Eric L., husband of Susan C. (Calhoun) Shultz, Spring Township and Mark D., husband of Susan M. (Jaskot) Shultz of South Heidelberg and her daughter, Dr. Susan K. Shultz, wife of Dr. Michael D. Craig, Vancouver, WA. She is also survived by her brother, Reiner W. Miller, Robesonia and her sister Ortrud U. (Miller) Fleisher, Wernersville and four granddaughters, Andrea, Lisa, Heather and Sarah.

Kathryn was predeceased by her sister, Doris G. Boyd.

Viewing on Friday January 25, 2013 from 7PM-9PM, Viewing on Saturday January 26, 2013 starting at 9AM with Services starting 10AM at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. Burial will be in Laureldale Cemetery.
