Katharine A. Work

Katharine A. (Burkey) Work, 94, formerly of Hamburg and a guest at The Highlands at Wyomissing, passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at The Highlands.

Her husband of 63 years, Thomas B. Work, predeceased her on August 12, 2010. She is survived by two sons, Robert I. Work and C. Thomas Work, both of Wyomissing; three grandchildren, Valerie L. Work, Jonathan T. Work and Melissa R. Work; and three great-grandchildren, Maxwell Thomas Work, Nathaniel Joseph Work and Arianna Nicole Work.

Born in Hamburg, Pennsylvania on January 13, 1924, she was one of the two children of Irwin F. and Ruth C. Burkey. Her brother, I. Russell Burkey, predeceased her on March 10, 2001. She was a member of First United Church of Christ in Hamburg.

Katharine was a 1945 graduate of Hood College, Frederick, Maryland, and a 1947 graduate of the former Philadelphia School of Occupational Therapy, now part of Penn Medicine. She was employed as an occupational therapist at the former Hamburg State School and Hospital for many years.

Her hobbies included knitting, weaving, and baking cookies for friends, members of The Highlands' maintenance staff who had helped her, and family. In addition to dozens of ornate sweaters for her family, she knitted caps for newborns at Reading Hospital.

At her request, her funeral and burial through Burkey & Driscoll Funeral Home, Inc., Hamburg, will be private. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Hamburg.
