Karl H. Letsch

Karl Letsch, 82, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2015 after a long and courageous battle against Parkinson's disease, his loving family surrounded him daily.

He was a resident of Wyomissing Hills for 47 years, though due to Parkinson's progression he spent the last three months under the excellent care of the staff of A-2 at Berks Heim. The family likes to thank Berks Heim & BVN Hospice.

Karl was a devoted family man and is survived by his wife, Elsa M. (Rominger); two daughters and two granddaughters and their families. They loved their Opa dearly. He is also survived by his sister, Eleonore Zimmerman; nieces and nephews and their families in Germany. Also Elsa's family in Germany, Canada and Mexico.

Born in Ebingen, Germany, he was the son of the late Ernst Gotthilf and Pauline Letsch (Matthes). He was predeceased by his brother Herman, two nephews, three brother-in-laws; and one sister-in-law, all in Germany.

Karl was educated in Ebingen, after an apprenticeship he received an associate degree in machine design. He immigrated to America. During the Korean Conflict he served with the U.S. Air Force mostly in France. He received an associate degree from DeVry Technical Institute, Chicago. Karl was employed by the MARS Co. and twenty years by AMP, Harrisburg (now Tyco Electronics) as a mechanical engineer.

He had a lifelong interest and passion of maintaining old timepieces and designed and built two clocks. He enjoyed outdoor activities with family and friends, hunting, travel, sailing, and walking. He was a history buff. He and his wife visited sick and shut-ins for over forty years and married 51 years.

Karl was an active member at St. John's Lutheran Church, 521 Walnut Street, Reading. He received the Eagle Award for his service. He was a longtime active member at the Evergreen Club and sang with the Liederkranz singers both –as long as his health allowed.

Karl was an organ donor, his brain was harvested and will be used by the Institute for Human Genomics for Parkinson's Research, Att. Aaron Uhlenberg, 1501 NW 10th Ave., Miami, FL 33136.

Honoring Karl's wishes, his memorial service is private. Inurnment will be at a later time at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery and Ebingen, Germany.
