Karen Marie Chimenko, 80, passed away peacefully in her Phoebe Berks residence on October 25, 2023. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of Eugene and R. Eleanor (Richards) Barth. Karen was the loving wife of Edward Chimenko, with whom she shared over 60 years.
Karen graduated from Wilson High School in 1961. She attended Albright College and Indiana University, where she studied English Literature. She was a voracious reader, a beautiful writer, and a master of the NY Times crossword.
An accomplished musician, Karen played the organ for over 50 years. She served most recently as Minister of Music at West Lawn United Methodist Church, where she was also a faithful member. She especially enjoyed her work there with children and regularly assisted with Vacation Bible School and Safe Haven, a West Lawn community after-school program.
Karen loved the peace of her garden and watching the birds, the joyful sounds of her choirs at Sunday worship, morning walks at the park with Ed, cooking a great meal, and sharing it with those she loved. Her door was always open, and her home was a respite to many through the years.
Her memory will be ever cherished by her daughter, Kate, wife of Dennis; her grandsons, Ian, Brandon, and Chris; her brothers, George, husband of Sharon, and Fred, husband of Karen; her sister, Margaret, wife of Christopher; her daughter-in-law, Sandy, married to Les; her brother-in-law, George, husband of Enga, and many dear extended family and friends.
In addition to her husband, Karen was predeceased by her parents, her son, Peter, and her sister, Lenore.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 11 AM at West Lawn United Methodist Church. A luncheon at the church will follow the service. Burial will be private.
