June C. Maurer

June C. (Newmoyer) Maurer, 81, formerly of Lincoln Park, passed away April 24, 2012 of natural causes, in her Mount Penn residence.

Her husband, Joseph A. Maurer Jr., died May 4, 1998.

Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Clarence W. and Ruth (Eiler) Newmoyer. She was a graduate of Reading High School.

June was employed by the former Lobel's Children Store on Penn Street where she was a top saleswoman.

Her deep love for children was evident in all she did from providing private child care to those in need to volunteering with Camp Fire Girls, Boy Scouts of America, and St. Margaret's Roman Catholic School.

She was an accomplished archer and modeled for a local agency during her teen years. In 1947 she was one of 42 teen girls from Berks County who traveled to Amherst, Mass. to work for General Cigar Co. as part of the YWCA Teen Club. The girls helped the company recover from a severe postwar manpower shortage by hoeing shade tobacco plants housed under cheesecloth tents. The girls sewed 22 pairs of leaves together on a lath once the leaves matured.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, West Reading.

Known as Junie and Junebug to her dear friends, she was an avid QVC supporter and had a deep love and appreciation for children, cooking, and music.

June is survived by two daughters, Sharon L., wife of Stephen Mast, Lower Alsace Township and Dawn M., wife of David R. Derr, Reinholds; three brothers, Leo Newmoyer, FL, Forest Newmoyer, CA, and Gordon Newmoyer, Reading; five grandchildren, Christopher and Michael Mast, Nicole and Craig Maurer, and Alexa Derr; and one great- granddaughter, Felecia Hummel.

June was predeceased in January by her son, Joseph A. III, widower of Georgine (Sheetz) Maurer, Wyomissing; and four brothers, Clarence, Vincent, Elwood and Douglas Newmoyer.

A public visitation will be Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Walter Christ Funeral Home, Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Children's Home of Reading, 1010 Centre Ave. Reading, PA, 19601. For online condolences, visit www.christfuneralhome.com.
