Julian E. "Skip" Flickinger passed away peacefully on August 13, 2015 in his Cumru Township home after a short illness. Born on May 13, 1929, in Altoona, PA, he was the son of the late John W. and Mary (Taylor) Flickinger. In his youth, Skip moved with his family from Harrisburg to West Reading, and he was a 1947 graduate of the former West Reading High School, where he was a charter member of the National Honor Society. From March 1951 to March 1953, he served in the U.S. Army, stationed at Edgewood Arsenal, MD, and Ft. McClellan, AL, rising to the rank of master sergeant. In 1962, he earned a certificate in accounting and finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and later attended computer courses at Temple University. For nearly thirty years, Skip was employed by the Glidden Company in several sales and management positions, retiring in 1988. Over the years, he served as president of the Cumru Township Republican League, as chairman of the Cumru Township Planning Commission, and as a member of the Western Berks Refuse Authority. During the course of his eighty-six years of life, Skip enjoyed traveling, camping, boating, waterskiing, playing cards, reading anything about history, attending and watching sporting events, and solving thousands of crossword puzzles.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jacqueline (Lavigna), in 1993, as well as by a sister, Jeanne Person, of St. Louis, Missouri. He is survived by a son, Michael, husband of Eileen (Fayda), of Exton, PA; a brother, John W., of Hamburg, PA; and a sister, Judith, wife of O. James Davis, of Ephrata, PA; two grandchildren, Julia and Samuel, who loved spending time with their "Pop Pop"; several cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his "best friend, traveling companion, and very significant other," Dorothy R. Crosby, of Cumru Township.
