With heavy hearts, our family would like to announce the passing of our dear sister, mother, and grandmother, Josephine "Jo" Quaglia, who passed away peacefully at home on March 31, 2026. She was 84.
Born May 27, 1941 and raised in Reading, Jo was the middle daughter of the late George Tomasi and Cecilia Tomasi, and the sister of Georgine Tomasi and the late Jim Tomasi. Her father George Tomasi was one of the founders of ATV bakery in downtown Reading.
A graduate of Central Catholic High School, she received an Associate's Degree from Gwynedd Mercy College, and later earned a Bachelor's degree from Alvernia and a Masters in Sociology from Kutztown University.
A blind date introduced Josephine to Joseph Quaglia. They were married in July of 1963 and remained happily married for 57 years. Joseph passed away in November 2020. Jo is survived by her sons, Ric, Seph, and John, and her grandchildren, Luna, Jullo, and Leo.
Jo dedicated many years of her life to serving others through her work in social services, including positions with Milieu in Pottstown, Berks Heim in Wernersville, and the Reading Hospital.
Throughout her life, Jo enjoyed many trips and experiences with her family, including Easter dinners atop the World Trade Center and a memorable family trip to Aruba. In her retirement, Joe and Jo enjoyed many wonderful travels to the Galapagos Islands, Antarctica, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Argentina, Panama Canal, and Sicily, where they spent time with close and loving relatives. The relationship she cultivated with her Sicilian relatives was very important to her, and she cherished it by learning to speak Italian and calling on holidays.
Jo was a Master Gardener and volunteered for over a decade at the Penn State Extension call center for research-based information on a wide range of horticultural topics. She volunteered for multiple years at the Philadelphia Flower Show. She was also an avid birder and volunteered in tree-counting throughout Berks County.
We will all remember her warm smile, gentle laugh, kindness to others, and her deep love and dedication to her family. Her spirit will live on in our hearts forever.
In lieu of flowers and other heartfelt gifts, please express sympathy by donating to the Alzheimer's Association, or Plant a Tree Memorial.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 9, 2026 in the Chapel of St. George in Gethsemane Cemetery, 3139 Kutztown Road, Laureldale, PA 19605.
