Joseph R. Seyfert, 85, of Hamburg passed away May 5, 2016, in his residence. Born in Upper Bern Township, he was the son of the late Walter N. and Amy E. (Degler) Seyfert. Joe's wife, Betty G. (Hartman) Mattson Seyfert, predeceased him on January 21, 2009. They were married on June 25, 1966. Joe graduated from Hamburg High School and worked as an electrician for 40 years, retiring from Western Electric in 1990. Joe was an active member of the First United Church of Christ, Hamburg, where he was a member of the church choir, a Sunday school teacher, and served as an elder on the Church Consistory for many years. He was a member of the Telecom Pioneers, the Hamburg Rod and Gun Club, the Shartlesville Fish and Game Association, and the Hornet's Nest Hunting Camp. He enjoyed golf, photography, and hunting. Following retirement, he traveled extensively and sang in the Hamburg Community Choir with his wife. Joe is survived by a daughter, Britta A. Mattson; a brother, Richard W. Seyfert, Sr.; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Bartholomew, Helen Kerschner, and Avalona Hartman; a brother-in-law, Timothy, husband of Bonnie Hartman; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Grace Dietrich and Helen Shenk. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 14, at 11:30 AM from the First United Church of Christ, 76 S. 3rd Street, Hamburg. A viewing will be held at the church from 10:00 to 11:30 AM. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church at the above address.
