Joseph M. Harenza, Sr., 87, a resident of the Highlands at Wyomissing, passed away on January 8, 2009.

Born May 30, 1921 in Dilles Bottom, OH, he was a son of the late Anthony J. and Anna K. (Stacha) Harenza.

He was the husband of Theresa J. (Indiciani) Harenza, to whom he was married for 65 years.

Mr. Harenza served in the U.S. Army for 22 years, attaining the rank of Major at the time of his retirement from active duty. He served in France, Iceland and the Pacific during the Second World War and on assignments around the world thereafter receiving numerous citations, awards and commendations. Upon retiring from active duty, Mr. Harenza continued to work for the Department of Defense, U.S. Army Material Command, finally retiring from the Logistics Systems Supply Agency, located at Letterkenny Army Depot, in Chambersburg, PA with combined active military and civilian service to the United States of 42 years. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and ELKS.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four of five sons: Joseph M. of Cumru Township; James A., husband of Jill of Bernville; Charles F.; and John A., husband of Katherine all of Wyomissing.

Other survivors include eight grandchildren: Brian J., Jeffrey A., Beth A., Michael L., David A., Adrienne J., Madeline J. and Elizabeth H. Harenza.

There is also a sister Blanche Stando of Fairpoint, OH surviving.

Joseph was predeceased by a son Denis M. Harenza, three sisters and two brothers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart R.C. Church, 8th and Franklin Sts., West Reading. A visitation will be held an hour before mass in the church. Interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
