Joseph N. Farrell, 70, of Wyomissing, died December 16, 2013, in Reading Hospital.
Born in Queens, NY, he was the son of the late Nicholas A. and Margaret H. (Tobin) Farrell.
He graduated from Wilson High School, attended LaSalle University, and graduated from Kutztown University.
While still in school Joe worked for the Reading Times where his career spanned multiple generations as a reporter and columnist.
Joe met his wife of 42 years, Elizabeth A. (Beth) Weiser when he was a police reporter and she was a registered nurse in the emergency room at St Joseph's Hospital.
He ran track and swam in high school. Joe later became a soccer enthusiast, coaching his children's teams and becoming the president of the Wyomissing Area Soccer Club. He also played over-30 for the Wyomissing team, and loved his time on the pitch and with his teammates.
A lover of books, Joe had a special interest in history especially World War II. He was a volunteer for BCTV, where he hosted a series on the Reading Railroad, Trolleys, Cities in Crises and Tales of World War II among others. Joe received the distinguished alumni award from Wilson High School.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Mary Elizabeth (Molly), wife of Thomas W. Texter, West Reading; Julie Ann, wife of Michael J. Hasson, Jr., Spring Twp.; and Sean Joseph Farrell, Shillington. There are two sisters, Margaret, wife of Michael Kirby, Silver Spring, MD; and Kathleen, wife of John Kalell, Dedham, MA. Five grandchildren, Conor, Alex, Erin, Rose and Meghan also survive him.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m. in the funeral home.
