Joseph Daniel Conrad, 90, passed away October 16, 2015 in St. Joseph Medical Center.
Born in Fleetwood, he was a son of the late Joseph B. and Jennie R. (Heffner) Conrad.
Joseph graduated with the Fleetwood High School Class of 1943 and enlisted in the U. S. Marines in August of that year. After completing training, he was deployed to the Pacific and went to Guam. When the war ended, he was stationed in Qingdao, China and participated in many missions. There, he met his brother, Allen, who had arrived in the port aboard a U.S. Navy destroyer. After helping repatriate Japanese personnel and civilians, he returned to the States.
He married his beloved wife, Rita M. (McDonald) on September 11, 1948.
Joseph was employed by Met-Ed for thirty seven years as an electrician.
He was a member of Holy Spirit Lutheran Church.
Joseph was a member of the Marine Corps League, VFW Post #38, and Deer Haunt Lodge which is located in Promise Land State Park. He was also very active in Scout Troop #238 and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his children: Joseph P., husband of Christine Conrad, Reading; James C. Conrad, Reading; Kathleen, widow of Thomas Hafer, Douglassville; John D. Conrad, Reading; and Jeffrey A. Conrad, Reading. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Matthew Conrad, Andrew Conrad, Tyler Hafer, Jacob Hafer, Taylor Hafer, Jordan Conrad; and two great grandchildren, Chase and Ashlyn Conrad.
Joseph was predeceased by his siblings: Helen Helm, Ruth Fry, Anna Malone, and Allen Conrad.
Services will be held Tuesday, October 20that 9:30 a.m. in Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 421 Windsor St, Reading, PA 19601. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery. A viewing will be held Monday from 6-8 p.m. in the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading and in the church Tuesday from 8:30-930 a.m. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to The Holy Spirit Lutheran Church at the address above; The Marine JROTC, 801 N 13th St, Reading, PA 19604; or The Gift of Life Family House, 401 Callowhill Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123.
