John W. Zitrick, Jr., 67, of Alsace Township, died February 25, 2013 in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center.
He was the husband of Barbara K. (Kolacz) Zitrick, whom he married nearly 42 years ago on March 20, 1971.
Born in St. Albans, NY, he was a son of the late John W. Zitrick, Sr., and Roberta (Thompson) Zitrick. He was also predeceased by his step-mother G. Frances (Thompson) Zitrick.
John was a graduate of Wantagh High School, Long Island; earned his BS from St. John's University, Jamaica Campus, NY and earned his MBA from Auburn University.
He was in management for General Public Utilities for 26 years, retiring in 1998; for the past 15 years he worked for Albright College as a student accounts manager, last working on Friday. He also served Berks County as the county radiological officer for civil defense for 10 years.
John was an avid stamp collector and past president of the Reading Stamp Club. He was also a 4th Degree Knight and treasurer of Knights of Columbus 14847, HGA and a past cub master for Boys Scouts pack 161, HGA.
He was a member of Holy Guardian Angels, R.C. Church, Hyde Park, where he was a lector and commentator for many years.
John was a Major in the U.S. Air Force, serving in the Vietnam Era.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his three children: Maureen Kay, wife of Seth Feldman, Alameda, CA; John Henry, husband of April Zitrick, Ephrata and Charles, husband of Katie Zitrick, Germantown, MD. Also surviving are his three siblings: Marieann Kesler, Martinsburg, WV; Richard W. Zitrick, Sinking Spring and James P. Zitrick, TX and three step brothers: Robert Trinkle, MD; Peter Trinkle, St. Petersburg, FL and Gerard Trinkle, Monroe, NY. Five grandchildren: Noah, Lillian and Julia Feldman, Conner Zitrick and Emma Zitrick also survive him.
He was predeceased by his son, Patrick Zitrick.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Guardian Angels, R.C. Church, 3121 Kutztown Road, Reading, PA 19605. Viewings will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. Burial will be Gethsemane Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: HGA, Knights of Columbus, at the above church address or Maryknoll Missionaries of NY, 55 Ryder Rd, Ossining, NY 10562.
