John "Jack" Augustus Walter, 91 passed away peacefully on Friday, January 17, 2025, after a short illness. He was the beloved husband of Jean M. (Waninger) Walter. They shared 66 wonderful years of marriage.
Born in Reading, on July 3, 1933, he was the son of the late Carl A. and Rita M. (Leitham). Jack was a proud member of the US Army and served during the Korean War era. After leaving the Army, Jack built his career at Met Ed, working various roles, and retired after 36 years. Jack was a loving servant of Jesus Christ, worshiping faithfully at St. Ignatius Loyola Church for many years. He was a loving husband to Jean, a dedicated father, and loving patriarch to his entire extended family. He was an avid lifelong Philadelphia and Penn State sports fan; a hot dog connoisseur, and enjoyed an "occasional" Manhattan.
Jack was a shining example for his entire family of how to live your life fully, faithfully, and lovingly, and he will be missed deeply. We celebrate his life knowing he now joins his beloved family in Heaven.
In addition to his wife, Jean, Jack's legacy includes his seven children: Kathy Metz (wife of Charles Metz), Stephen Walter (husband of Jodi), Mark Walter (husband of Terri) David Walter (husband of Jody), Mary Polyak (fiancé of Bill Prutzman), Michael Walter (husband of Charlene), and John Walter (husband of Jaime); his 15 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brothers: Frank, Carl, and Freddy; as well as one of his grandchildren, Logan Walter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at St. Ignatius Loyola Church, 2600 St. Albans Dr, Reading, PA 19609 at 10 a.m. A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. until the start of the Mass. Burial will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery.
