John C. Sincavage

John Sincavage, 81, who brought the 1st ice arena to the Reading area in 1984, passed away early Saturday morning October 19, 2013. His wife, Joan was with him.

John felt strongly that the youth of the area needed a new kind of activity that they and their families could enjoy and be together. "It only takes an hour or two of ice skating to keep a kid out of trouble after school", he said often. In 1984 he drew up the plans and oversaw the construction of the "Timberline Ice Arena". It opened and ice hockey and figure skating took off. Timberline was operated as a family place for everyone to enjoy. Next came the "Timberline In-Line" rink, then the Ice Plex was built in 2001 to accommodate the volume of ice skaters and the need for more ice time. Many of the ice men now at the Santander Arena learned their skills at Timberline. John was very proud of that fact. The family is very grateful for the moment of remembrance at Sunday's Royals game.

Born in Pottsville, raised in Minersville, he attended the Schuylkill Haven Campus of Penn State for chemical engineering.

Surviving are his wife, Joan, of 58 years, his son John Jr. of Las Vegas, his son James who was his partner and director of operations in all three facilities. Also four grandchildren: John Nicholas in Las Vegas, Alex, Harrison and Thaddeus in the Reading area and one great-grandchild, Jacob in Las Vegas.

Services will be private for the family. If you wish to send condolences, please forward them to Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading, PA 19611. Online condolences may be recorded at www.kuhnfuneralhome.com.
