John Calvin Reider

John Calvin Reider, 79, of Oley, died November 10, 2013 in The Reading Hospital and Medical Center.

He was the husband of Mary Alice (Griesemer) Reider, whom he married May 27, 1961.

Born on April 15, 1934 in The Reading Hopsital, West Reading, he was a son of the late Edith Glase (Manwiller) and John Sittler Reider.

John was a 1952 graduate of Oley High School, a 1957 graduate of Lehigh University and a graduate of Temple University.

He served in the U.S. Army in Schweinfurt, Germany from 1957 through 1959. During that time, he competed in track events and played in the post band.

He began his teaching career in the Easton School System. After returning home to Oley, he taught in the Oley School System for 32 years in the English and science departments with most of the years spent teaching chemistry and physics. He retired in 1992.

While a student at Lehigh University, he participated in track and field competitions with javelin throwing as his main event. He continued this competition for much of his life and also coached track and field at Oley Valley High School for many years.

John played the clarinet in both the marching and concert bands at Lehigh University and later played in the Ringgold Band of Reading. He was a member of Frieden's United Church of Christ, Oley. He sang with both the Frieden's UCC and Community UCC choirs.

His many outdoor activities included rock climbing, hiking, canoeing, camping and playing tennis. Some years ago he took up painting and enrolled in classes at the Yocum Institute of the Arts and participated in their workshops. John enjoyed traveling ever since his years in Germany when he saw much of Europe.

Also surviving are his daughter, Karen A. Reider, wife of White E. Gibson IV of Catonsville, MD; his son, J. Scott Reider, husband of Andrea R. Roddy, and grandsons, John O. and Owen C. of West Friendship, MD.

A graveside service will be held Monday at 11:30 a.m. in Frieden's Cemetery, 337 Main Street, Oley. Viewings will be held Sunday evening from 6:30-8:00 and Monday from 10-11 a.m. in the Kuhn-Stitzel Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 423 Main Street, Oley.
