John S. Hunter

Dr. John S. Hunter, 98, retired physician, passed away September 28, 2011, in The Highlands at Wyomissing.

Dr. Hunter, formerly of Shillington, husband of Grace G. (Gabel), was a resident at the Highlands at Wyomissing since April 6, 1989. He had a Family Practice at the Shillington residence for 40 years.

Born in Wyomissing, he was the son of the late Sidney H. and Anna (Thiele) Hunter.

Hunter was a 1930 graduate of West Reading High School. He attended Wyomissing Technical Institute in 1931. He graduated from Duke University in 1935. He received a Doctor of Medicine degree from Temple Medical School in 1939. He served his internship at the Reading Hospital, 1939 - 1940. He was a Chief Resident at Reading Hospital 1940 - 1941.

Hunter served in the U.S. Army, World War II, 1941 - 1946, leaving the service with a rank of Major. He served in the European Theater 1943 - 1945. He was chief of the Orthopedic section of the 10th Station Hospital, 116th General Hospital and the 67th Evacuation Hospital.

He had a private medical practice in Shillington, 1946 - 1983. He was a charter Fellow in the American Academy of Family Practice. He was a member of the Active Staff of the Reading Hospital from 1946 - 1983 and a member of the Honorary Staff from 1983 to date. He was a member of the Berks County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the American Academy of Family Practice.

He was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Shillington. Dr. Hunter was President of Porters Lake Hunting and Fishing Club in Pike County, 1967 - 1969. He was also a member of the Young Republican Club.

Hunter served on the Zoning Hearing Board of Shillington of which he was chairman of the Board, 1978 - 1989. He was a member of the original Steering Committee of the Highlands at Wyomissing. He was also a member of Highlands Resident Council, of which he also served as President in 1996 and was a member of the Board of Directors in 1996.

Dr. Hunter loved the outdoors. An avid hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed sharing his hobby with family and friends. He enjoyed vacationing with family at Porters Lake Hunting and Fishing Club and Pleasant Island, Maine.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Dr. Philip G., husband of Mary Hunter, Bangor, Maine and his daughter, Susan (Hunter),wife of Dr. Norman Scott, Ames, Iowa.

He is also survived by six grandchildren, Karen Korn, Molly Fowler, Jan Placella, Andrew Scott, Christy Franco and Jennifer Coleman and twelve great-grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in The Highlands at Wyomissing. Burial will be private in Laureldale Cemetery.
