John Calhoun Smith, Jr., 87, of Philadelphia, died March 9th at 11:45 am in Chestnut Hill Lodge, Montgomery County, where he had been since November 26, 2004.
He was the husband of Louise L. (Lopez) Smith.
Born in Reading, he was a son of the late John Calhoun Sr., and Ida B. (Jordan) Smith.
He was a 1935 graduate of Mount Penn High School and attended both Penn State University and Philadelphia College of the Arts.
Smith was employed for 28 years as a design engineer at The Budd Company, retiring in 1980.
He was a Jazz musician all of his life playing both the saxophone and clarinet.
Smith was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Reading.
He was a Navy Veteran of WWII.
Smith is also survived by two sons, John C. "Jack" III of Wayne and Martin W. of San Rafael, California.
Other survivors include a daughter, Beatrice (Smith) Golden of Philadelphia and a sister, Helen (Smith) Chern of Columbus, Ohio.
There are also five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Monday at 10:00 am in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Exeter Township. Rev. John R. Francis officiating. Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, Inc., Laureldale is in charge of arrangements.
