After a brief hospital stay, John Bergen Stevens III died of natural causes on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at Penn State Health St. Joseph Hospital, Reading.
John spent his earliest years in the 0ley Valley. He grew up in Wyomissing, and attended local public schools, participating in youth and varsity football and basketball. He graduated from Bucknell University in 1968 where he played basketball, majored in English, and was president of Sigma Chi fraternity.
John served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War as a language specialist from
1968 – 72. He then pursued a career in sales/marketing, working for several national and local companies, traveling extensively in the U.S. He had occasion to call Omaha, Reading, Rochester, Bloomingdale, and Oley his home.
John married Marsha Goforth. They had three daughters, Laura, Alison, and Nicole. After John and Marsha divorced, John met and later married Beverly Sheetz in 1994. They moved to Oley where they made dear friends, and participated in community and animal rescue activities. John enjoyed playing golf, doing genealogy research, assisting in his wife's craft business, cheering for local sports teams, watching football, basketball and golf.
John is predeceased by his parents, John B. Stevens Jr. and Anna May (Diefenderfer) Stevens, his older sister Laurie, his wife Beverly, his ex-wife, Marsha, his daughter Nicole and his brother-in-law Bill.
He is survived by his daughter, Laura (Jeremy) Prober of Palmyra, NY, and her two children; his daughter, Alison Stevens of Robesonia, and her son. He is also survived by his brother, Garrett B. (Andrea) Stevens of Chevy Chase, MD, his niece Jane (Jack), his nephew Benjamin (Debbie) and five great-nieces and nephew as well as his younger sister, Mary Ellen Breidegam of Boyertown, and his brother-in-law Bobby (Susan) Sheetz.
