John E. Althouse

John Edwin Althouse, 89, of Laureldale, died May 1, 2007 at 1:00 am in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, where he had been a patient since April 16th.

He was the husband of Dorothy Florence (Lerch) Althouse, whom he married September 27, 1941.

Born November 11, 1917 in his Laureldale home, he was a son of the late Edwin Benjamin and Sallie(Kauffman) Althouse.

He was a 1936 graduate of Muhlenberg High School.

John was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Laureldale.

He was employed 34 years as a plumber and pipe fitter with the Reading Railroad before retiring in 1978.

John was an Army Veteran and a Pearl Harbor survivor in WWII.

He is also survived by a daughter, Carol A. (Althouse) wife of Warren L. Kulp of Laureldale and a son, David C. husband of Rosemarie T. (Troller) Althouse of Reading.

Other survivors include a brother, Harold Althouse of Douglassville and three sisters, Joan Althouse of Dauberville, Anna Parzanesse of Exeter Township and Helen Keller of St. Cloud, Florida.

There are also four grandchildren, Thomas Kulp, Cathy Rothermel, Theresa Althouse and James Althouse and five great grandchildren; Charles, Andrew, Randall, Emily and Joshua.

John was predeceased by five siblings; Wilson Althouse, Clarence Althouse, Mary Burdan, Ida Prutzman and Ruth Reber.

Services will be Friday at 10am in Walter R. Christ Funeral Home, 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale, with the Rev. Grant Wickert officiating. A viewing will be held one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery of Centre Township.
