JoAnn Carabello, 77, of Blue Bell, died June 28, 2010 in Abington Memorial Hospital.
Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Mary (Rutolo) Carabello.
She was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and Albright College.
In 1953 she received her medical technologist certification under the supervision of Drs. George DesJardins and Jasper Chen See at St. Joseph's Hospital, Reading, PA. From 1954-1964 she was the supervisor of transfusion medicine at St. Joseph's.
In 1965 she joined Temple University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA, as the supervisor of the Hematology and Coagulation Department.
Along with Dr. James Day, JoAnn established the Hemostasis and Thrombosis Referral Laboratory at Temple University Hospital which serviced the Southeastern PA area. In addition, they developed and coordinated a nationally recognized Hemostasis and Thrombosis Workshop at Temple University Health Science Center.
She retired in December of 2002. She was a member of Holy Rosary R.C. Church, Reading.
She is survived by her cousins and friends.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Rosary R.C. Church, 237 Franklin St., Reading. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery, Muhlenberg Township. A visitation will be Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the church. Contributions may be made to GYN ONC Memorial Research Fund and mailed to: Parviz Hanjani, M.D., Abington Memorial Hospital, Rosenfeld Cancer Center, 1 Weidner Bldg, 1200 Old York Rd., Abington, PA 19001.
