Joan A. Yoder (Ubil), 89, died peacefully Thursday, September 26 at 2:40 PM at the Lutheran Home at Topton, PA. Joan is formally from Laureldale, Wyomissing and Hamburg. She was born June 2, 1935 in Reading, the only daughter of the late James and Helen (Warfel) Ubil. She graduated from Reading High School, class of 1953.
Joan is survived by her only daughter, Lyndel Balthaser, wife of Nelson Balthaser of Blandon, PA and two grandsons, Ryan of Fairfax, Virginia and Kyle of Suwanee, Georgia.
Joan was very close to her family, very proud of them; strong, loving, selfless, giving, generous and loyal. She shared 61 years of marriage with her doting husband, Glenn, who predeceased her by two years. She missed him terribly and is now reunited with him in heaven, along with the two dogs and many cats that were a part of her family.
Joan began working at an early age in several downtown Reading department stores. She then became the first woman keypunch operator in the city, working for several companies. She moved on to work at Camp Hosiery where she met her husband. They decided to go into business for themselves in Hamburg, PA where they opened Yoder's Home Furnishings and Cleaning Service. Later on, they also opened a Montgomery Ward franchise. Their work ethic and dedication was exemplary and admired by many who knew them. After selling the business, they both worked for NPI, where Joan was an office manager until she retired.
Joan and her husband enjoyed traveling, especially cruises, with trips to Spain, Italy, Mexico, Bermuda, Florida, Atlantic City, Las Vegas and Brigantine, New Jersey. They both loved casino trips as well, She enjoyed spending time with family, especially all of the birthdays and holidays.
Joan was a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend who will be missed by all who knew her.
Burial will be private at the convenience of the family in St. Michael's Cemetery, Hamburg, PA.
