Joan M. Stednitz

Joan M. Stednitz, 80, of Cumru Township died May 10, 2012 in Mifflin Center.

Her husband, John Stednitz, passed away July 17, 2011. They were married on April 23, 1955 in Pottsville.

Born in Pottsville, she was a daughter of the late John J. and Hilda (Bohr) Brehony.

Joan was a graduate of Pottsville Catholic High School. She still kept in touch with many of her classmates from school.

She worked for Bell Telephone and retired from Sears Roebuck and Company.

Joan was a member of St. Peter's R.C. Church, Reading.

"Nan", as she was called, and John loved to attend Polka dances with friends. She enjoyed reminiscing about the years she and John lived in town, their neighbors and when they bought their first house on N 2nd Street. She made the best "dutch cake" for her children when they were young. She was a loving, caring parent, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend; she will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her three children: Beth A., wife of Ronald J. Shipper, Reading; John W., husband of Claire L. Stednitz, Wyomissing and Michael P., husband of Lisa L. Stednitz, Cumru Township. Also surviving are her sister, Carol McCaulley Valleau and several nieces and nephews. Seven grandchildren: Sarah, wife of Gregory Oshel, Silver Spring, MD; Caleigh Stednitz, Wyomissing; Caine Stednitz, Wyomissing; Keith Stednitz, Cumru Township; Paul Kantner, Pittsburgh; Wende Myers, Mechanicsburg and Kylie Noll, Reading and three great-grandchildren: Maddox, Robert and Lucy also survive her. She will be missed by her much loved pets: Jax the dog and her cats: Katrina, Charlotte and Wedge.

Joan's family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Mifflin Center who went above and beyond the call of duty in keeping Joan comfortable and for their support during her stay.

A Prayer Service will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. A visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
