Joan M. Schaum

Joan M. Texter Schaum, of Berks County, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, at Berks Heim. She was the devoted wife of Harry Johnson Schaum, with whom she shared 71 years of marriage.

Born in Reading, Joan was the daughter of the late Irwin W. Texter and Mary Elizabeth (Lutz) Texter. She was a graduate of Robesonia High School. Throughout her life, Joan worked in banking and financial services, serving as a bank teller and in customer and loan services, where she was known for her kindness and dedication to helping others.

In addition to her work in banking, Joan and her family owned and operated Ernst Flower Shop for 18 years, becoming a familiar and cherished part of the community. Joan also worked for the West Lawn Library, for a number of years, where you could find her smiling her way through the day.

Joan was a lifelong and active member of St. Daniel's Lutheran Church in Robesonia. Her faith was central to her life, and she generously gave her time to the church, teaching Sunday school for 35 years and helping guide generations of children in their faith.

Music was also an important part of Joan's life. She played the clarinet in the Ringgold Band for a decade and shared her love of music by giving clarinet lessons to students in the community. Although her talent stayed loyal to the clarinet, Joan loved to walk around, and leave voicemails singing little tunes to her loved ones.

In addition to her loving husband, Harry, Joan is survived by her two sons; John J. Schaum and his husband, Angel Daniel Hernandez, of Los Angeles, and James Schaum, of Womelsdorf. Joan also had three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; Nathan Schaum and his wife, Kimberley, with their children, Aurora, and Jack, of Norfolk, VA, Jacob Schaum and his wife, Macy, with their daughter Faylee, of Carlisle, and Catherine Schaum of Womelsdorf. In addition, she is survived by her beloved sister, Ann E. Faust, of Wernersville. She will also be remembered fondly by many extended family members, friends, and former students. Joan absolutely adored her loved ones and anyone who crossed paths with her adored her just the same. Her generous, kind, loving soul shone bright in any room and will continue to be felt by the people she touched.
