Joan Shirley Demarte

Joan (Riegel) DeMarte, 88, of Reading passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Thursday, February 13, 2025. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph DeMarte, whom she married on November 27, 1958. He passed away on August 11, 2012.

Joan was born in Reading, Pennsylvania on April 16, 1936 to the late Goldie C. (Clevenger) and Elwood Riegel.

She was a graduate of Reading High School and previously employed by Travelers Insurance. She served many years as a crossing guard and lunch aide for the Reading School District. Later in life, Joan was very proud of the 20 years she worked at Boscov's North. She was an avid Phillies fan, loved to play cards and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Joan was a member of St. Marks United Church, Reading.

Joan is survived by her sons, Joseph R. husband of Diana and Jeffrey S. fiancé of Holli Nigh. She adored her five grandchildren, Nicole, Eric, Jessica, Marissa, and Kyla DeMarte. She is also survived by her nieces, nephews and extended family who held a special place in her heart.

She is predeceased by her five brothers, James, Donald, Harold, Leon, and Richard Riegel.

The DeMarte family would like to thank all those who provided special care for Joan in her final months.

The Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at 1:30 PM at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Avenue, West Reading, PA 19611. The visitation will be held from 12:30 PM to the time of service. Burial will follow at the Chapel of Resurrection at Gethsemane Cemetery, 3139 Kutztown Road, Reading, PA 19605.
