Janet M. Smithgall

Janet M. (Magrini) Smithgall, 87, of Wyomissing, passed away February 22, 2018, at the Berkshire Center.

She was the wife of James J. Smithgall; they were married for 63 years.

Born in Hershey, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (Ferucci) Magrini.

She was a graduate of Hershey High School, Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Nutrition and Dietetics, and Drexel University where she earned her master's degree in Nutrition Science.

Janet was employed by the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and other Philadelphia hospitals as a clinical dietitian and researcher. She was also instrumental in initiating the Reading Dial A Dietitian Program.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children: Dr. Francis J., husband of Dr. Francine Paladino Smithgall, Cherry Hill, NJ; Prof. Thomas E., husband of Amy L. Smithgall, Wexford, PA; and Edward P., husband of Aracely Smithgall, Seattle, WA. There were two sisters, Joanne, New Hampshire, and Frannie (deceased). Six grandchildren:Dr. Marie, Benjamin, Madeline, William, Michael and Nicholas also survive her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart R.C. Church, West Reading with burial to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery. A viewing will be held Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society www.cancer.org.
