Jane Hernley Sheetz, 86, formerly of Sinking Spring, passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2013 in Country Meadows of Wyomissing, where she resided.
She was the widow of Jesse F. Sheetz, who predeceased her on January 2, 2004.
Born in Manheim, Lancaster County, she was a daughter of the late Peter M. and Rebecca K. (Heistand) Hernley.
Jane was a teacher for over 37 years, retiring in 1993 from Wyomissing Hills Elementary School, where she had taught kindergarten since 1964. She previously taught at the former Manheim Boro, Lancaster County; Greenwood Joint, Perry County; and Wilson School District, Berks County.
Jane was a member of the Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma; was recognized by the Council for Exceptional Children; and was listed in the "Who's Who Among America's Teachers".
Jane was a 1945 graduate of the former Manheim Boro High School and earned her Bachelor's degree from Elizabethtown College in 1949.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
Jane is survived by a daughter, Robin, wife of Jack Heim, Mohnton, and a granddaughter, Rena. She is also survived by her brother, Peter A. Hernley; four sisters, Naomi Greiner, Orpah Graybill, Reba Hershey, and Lois Derstler; as well as many nephews and nieces.
Jane was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Rohrer.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at 10:30 AM in Trinity Lutheran Church, 527 Washington Street, Reading, PA 19601 with the Reverend Fred Opalinski officiating. Burial will be private at Pleasant View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church at the address above.
